Dog Wellness & Nutrition
Keeping service dogs healthy, happy, and ready to work

Proper nutrition is foundational to a service dog’s long-term health, performance, and longevity.
Service Dog Health and Wellness
A service dog’s ability to perform its job effectively depends directly on its physical health. At Texas Service Dogs, we take the wellness of our dogs very seriously throughout every stage of their training and placement. Proper nutrition, regular veterinary care, and appropriate exercise are all essential components of a healthy service dog.
We work closely with our veterinary partners to ensure that each dog in our program receives a diet appropriate for their age, size, and activity level. Service dogs in active training require diets that support muscle development and sustained energy, while senior dogs or those recovering from illness may need specialized formulations.
Nutrition Guidelines for Working Dogs
High-quality commercial dog foods that meet AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) standards are the foundation of a service dog’s diet. We recommend foods with named protein sources (chicken, beef, salmon) as the primary ingredient, and we avoid foods with excessive artificial additives or fillers.
Healthy whole foods can also supplement a service dog’s diet. Cooked eggs, plain yogurt, cooked lean meats, and certain vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and green beans are all safe and nutritious additions. Always consult your veterinarian before making significant changes to your dog’s diet.
